The Bile Acid Serum Test (Total Bile Acids) is a specialized blood test used to assess how well the liver is functioning and how efficiently bile is flowing from the liver to the small intestine.
Bile acids are produced in the liver from cholesterol, stored in the gallbladder, and released into the intestine to help digest fats. After digestion, the liver "recycles" these acids from the blood. If the liver is damaged or bile flow is blocked, bile acids leak into the bloodstream, causing levels to rise.
